Definition, History, Quality

I first heard about essential oils over twenty years ago and believe me, back then my first reaction was, “essential what?” I had no idea what they were or how they worked. Although essential oils are far more popular and even trendy now, I’ve found more often than not people still ask, “What are they and how do they work?” The simplest answer is that an essential oil is the highly concentrated, volatile, aromatic essence of plant.  It contains hundreds of chemical compounds and is fifty to one hundred times more concentrated than the oils in dried herbs used in Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine and other herbal practices.  The oils are distilled from flowers, trees, roots, bushes, and seeds of plants and it’s the distillation process that makes essential oils so concentrated and potent.  It often requires an entire plant or more to produce a single drop of distilled essential oil. For example, it takes nearly five thousand pounds of rose petals to produce just one kilo of rose oil and adding just one drop of peppermint oil to a glass of water has approximately the same concentration as twenty tea bags!

However, dating back even earlier frankincense, myrrh, cedarwood and sandalwood were widely used in ancient Egyptian purification and embalming rituals.

eo chemistry chartThe chemical compounds found in essential oils can have very specific healing properties.  The following will give you an idea of the variety of applications possible:  Terpenes oxygenate the cells, clear cellular memory of misinformation and are essentially responsible for producing the the numerous therapeutic affects we experience.  Ethers are balancing, calming, help release emotions and may have an uplifting.  Alchohols are energizing and cleaning.   Oxides are best known for decongesting the lungs and sinuses.  So, just as your doctor may prescribe you a specific medicine to address your health issue, essential oils also have the ability to be applied for their specific chemical propensities to address specific conditions.

Last, but certainly not least is what I consider to be the most exciting factor; the quantum physics of essential oils. Without getting too scientific that means essentially that you have the potential to influence the results you receive from the oil you use. How?  Since essential oils also have electrical properties they are therefore subject to our thoughts and feelings.   It’s similar to how Japanese scientist, Masaru Emoto proved that human thought and emotion affected the crystalline structure of frozen water.  When he aimed positive thoughts at the water, such as “love,” “angel,” or “appreciation,” it crystallized into beautiful icy patterns.  However, when he aimed negative thoughts at the water, such as “hate,” “demon,” or “kill” the frozen water produced ugly crystals.  (Messages from Water and the Universe by Masaru Emoto.)

The point is that human thought and intent actually affects the electron behavior of the water and how it shapes itself.  This is subsequently true with essential oils.   If you’re open minded and willing to have a positive experience with the oil then you’re far more likely to achieve that result than someone who is closed minded and negative.

Your consciousness affects the results you get from the oils but the quality of the oil is critically important as well.  I like the saying, “Garbage In – Garbage Out” when referring to nutritional eating habits.  However, the same adage applies to essential oils.  If the essential oil was created using a plant that was sprayed with heavy pesticides, filled with polluted water and then processed using toxic solvents then you’re most likely going to have an experience ranging from none to minimal results at best to an allergic reaction at worst.

12467470504_1829e3cbe7_zThere are significant differences between synthetic fragrance oils and pure essential oils. All Young Living Essential Oils™ are therapeutic grade and Earth Kosher-Certified.  Therapeutic-grade oils are pure, medicinal, and contain all the desired therapeutic compounds. Therapeutic quality are usually made from organically grown plants, and are carefully distilled at the proper temperatures. Synthetic or nature-identical oils oils may have been created in a laboratory. They could contain synthetics, pesticides, fertilizers, extenders, or carrier oils. Extended or altered oils are perfume grade and may contain the same type of adulterating chemicals as synthetic oils. They usually contain chemical solvents. Natural oils (organic) and certified oils may not contain any or just a few therapeutic compounds.

Young Living Essential Oils™ produces their essential oils using the Seed To Seal® Process to insure the highest quality possible:
